Lightning strikes twice

CBN Lightning under 14 boys team captured their second straight provincial soccer title Sunday Aug. 15.

The team competed in the tournament held at Smallwood Field in Mount Pearl.

Coach Robert Tarrant said his team went undefeated in the tournament scoring “an incredible 36 goals in five games and only allowing 7.”

Coach Tarrant said he was “ was very impressed with his team’s performance especially with the loss of their starting goalkeeper only two days before the opening of the tournament. We had so much depth on our team this year that we could take one of our top strikers off the field and put him in the net and still be a dominant team.”

Although replacement goalie Brandon Moriarity had very little game experience, he played extremely well throughout the tournament earning him the MVP (most valuable player) award.

Tarrant felt his team played well as a unit and had strong defenders, midfielders and strikers. It didn’t hurt to have two players, William Hayes and Alyssa Laing who have played on provincial teams and another three who are quite capable of playing on provincial teams this year, the coach noted.

Winning this title was a fitting end to a flawless season for this team who did not lose a single game in three tournaments this summer.

Next year ten of these players move up to the under 16 where they will challenge teams for a title in that new age group. The remaining seven players will form the core of the team that will try to make it three in a row next season.
