Store owner raises funds for Jumnpstart
Trevor Lowe, owner of Canadian Tire in Carbonear, clocked off a total of 144 kilometres in a non-stop, six-hour cycling marathon on a stationary bicycle inside his store.
He may not have gone very far during the Friday, Aug. 27 event, but he did succeed in raising $300 for the local chapter of Jumpstart.
The charitable program helps kids between the ages of four and 18 participate in organized sports and recreation such as hockey, dance, soccer and swimming, to enable them to develop important life skills, self esteem and confidence.
Five hours into the event, after reaching the 118-kilometre mark, Lowe admitted, not surprisingly, “it’s getting tiring now.” He had set a personal goal of 150 kilometres by day’s end.
The physical weariness notwithstanding, he added, “ I think it’s important to get kids active in sports.” Cycling is not a new activity for Lowe. “I’m a triathlete. I’ve trained for half Ironman races, so I’m pretty much in the zone,” he explained.
Store employees were invited to ride with Lowe in 15-min-bute intervals.
“A number of staff have signed up to support the cause and bring awareness in the store to the program,” he said.
Lowe’s eight-year-old daughter, Kirsten, was in charge of the table.
“I’m raising money to help kids do sports,” she said. She felt good when people stopped by to donate to Jumpstart, she added.
The event was training for another Jumpstart fundraising event, a maritime bike tour. Eight Canadian cyclists from across the country will begin a fiveday, 800-kilometre ride on Wednesday, Sept. 8. Lowe will be part of the team.
“I’ve already taken some longer rides to prepare for the big trek we’re planning,” Lowe explained.
If the event in Carbonear is any indication, Lowe will be t h ere for the duration of the tour.
