Carbonear takes silver
Under-12 team shines at provincial minor softball tourney
The under-12 team with Carbonear minor softball captured silver at the 2010 provincial tournament, which was held in Carbonear Aug. 2829.
A team from Conception Bay Central (CBC) went undefeated in the tourney to take home the gold medal.
In the opening match Carbonear went head to head with Butlerville, who outlasted the host team 15-13 in extra innings.
Carbonear proved to be no match for CBC in the second game. CBC blanked Carbonear 11-0, handing the team their second loss of the tournament. In games 3, 4 and 5 Carbonear roared back to defeat Foxtrap 17-12, Placentia 14-8 and edge Butlerville in the semi-final 7-6.
That earned Carbonear its birth in the championship game against CBC.
The hometown team went all out in the seven complete innings, but came up short at the end, losing 8-7 in the bottom of the seventh.
Double plays, diving catches and infield home runs were a big contributing factor in Carbonear’s fight to stay in the game.
The large crowd of fans who turned out to cheer on their hometown team, filled the ballpark with encouragement, excitement and pressure for the young players.
This marked Carbonear’s third provincial minor tournament in the two years the program has been running.
Under the direction of David Kennedy and David Doran the team had less than eight weeks to prepare for the provincial showdowns.
Great weather, fans, volunteers and host team hospitality all contributed to a successful weekend tourney, organizers say.
