Stars seek top-three finish
Junior team opens 2010-11 campaign on Friday against Southern Shore
The Conception Bay North Junior Stars will kick off its 12th season in the Kent St. John’s Junior Hockey League on Friday at the Bay Arena when it hosts the Southern Shore Junior Breakers.
Stars’ head coach Eddie Russell said the team is looking to improve on its fourth place finish last season, and its semi-final loss to the eventual league champs St. John’s Junior Capitals.
This year’s edition of the Stars will be a mixture of returning players and recent graduates of the Bay Arena and CeeBees minor hockey systems. Returning players include Mason Reid, Tyler Adams, Brandon Burry, Brian Greeley, Nathan Mayo, Shane McGrath, Cody Noseworthy, Ryan Parsons, Jason Penny, Greg Roberts and Zach Ryan.
Newcomer hopefuls include Michael Andrews, Brandon Mercer, Brandon Parrot, Edward Badcock, David Fullerton, Justin Andrews, Brad Baldwin, Jarod Dawe and Philip Russell.
Russell is looking forward to the season and has high hopes for hisi squad. He hopes to compete for the championship this season.
“ We plan to build on last year’s excellent second half, with a goal to finish top-three in the regular season and be there in the league finals. Although a young team, it will be a committed and energetic team who will bring their best every night,” he said.
General Manager Brian Hurley said the team is hoping to add some talent through the league’s three drafts, the first of which took place on Sept. 18.
Hurley expressed disappointment that the Cee Bee Stars of the Avalon senior league have chosen to affiliate with the Avalon Junior Capitals of St. John’s for the upcoming season.
“ The players looked forward to the opportunity from time to time to get a call up with the senior team,” Hurley said.
