Stars seek top-three fin­ish

Ju­nior team opens 2010-11 cam­paign on Fri­day against South­ern Shore

The Con­cep­tion Bay North Ju­nior Stars will kick off its 12th sea­son in the Kent St. John’s Ju­nior Hockey League on Fri­day at the Bay Arena when it hosts the South­ern Shore Ju­nior Break­ers.

Stars’ head coach Ed­die Rus­sell said the team is look­ing to im­prove on its fourth place fin­ish last sea­son, and its semi-fi­nal loss to the even­tual league champs St. John’s Ju­nior Cap­i­tals.

This year’s edi­tion of the Stars will be a mix­ture of re­turn­ing play­ers and re­cent grad­u­ates of the Bay Arena and CeeBees mi­nor hockey sys­tems. Re­turn­ing play­ers in­clude Ma­son Reid, Tyler Adams, Bran­don Burry, Brian Gree­ley, Nathan Mayo, Shane McGrath, Cody Nose­wor­thy, Ryan Par­sons, Ja­son Penny, Greg Roberts and Zach Ryan.

New­comer hope­fuls in­clude Michael An­drews, Bran­don Mercer, Bran­don Par­rot, Ed­ward Bad­cock, David Fuller­ton, Justin An­drews, Brad Bald­win, Jarod Dawe and Philip Rus­sell.

Rus­sell is look­ing for­ward to the sea­son and has high hopes for hisi squad. He hopes to com­pete for the cham­pi­onship this sea­son.

“ We plan to build on last year’s ex­cel­lent sec­ond half, with a goal to fin­ish top-three in the reg­u­lar sea­son and be there in the league fi­nals. Al­though a young team, it will be a com­mit­ted and en­er­getic team who will bring their best ev­ery night,” he said.

Gen­eral Man­ager Brian Hurley said the team is hop­ing to add some tal­ent through the league’s three drafts, the first of which took place on Sept. 18.

Hurley expressed dis­ap­point­ment that the Cee Bee Stars of the Avalon se­nior league have cho­sen to af­fil­i­ate with the Avalon Ju­nior Cap­i­tals of St. John’s for the up­com­ing sea­son.

“ The play­ers looked for­ward to the op­por­tu­nity from time to time to get a call up with the se­nior team,” Hurley said.

The head coach of the Con­cep­tion Bay North Ju­nior Stars is Ed­die Rus­sell.
