Water and sewer upgrades in Bay Roberts

Motorists travelling the Conception Bay Highway through Bay Roberts are going to need a large measure of patience in the weeks ahead. Traffic snarls will be the order of the day as construction workers upgrade the town’s water and sewer system.

“It’s the price of growth, a necessary evil in moving forward,” said Nigel Black, chief administrative officer with the town.

The four-part contract calls for the installation of a lift station, force sewer main, gravity sewer main and outfall.

“ The town had a water and sewer study done by our engineers, identifying the weak spots of our system,” Black added.

The current lift station, located on the outer section of Powell’s Supermarket parking lot, is getting overloaded.

Upgrades are needed because of brisk growth in the area and the design of the system already in place, Black explained.

“It’s been a point that chokes off the system,” he said.

“At the intersection of Water Street and the Conception Bay Highway, at Powell’s Supermarket parking lot, we’re putting in a bigger lift station to handle the additional flow of the sewer,” Black explained.

“From there, it’s pumped up, via a force main, along the Highway through Track Road and over Station Road, where it becomes a gravity flow system and flows down behind the lots near Bayshore Estates and out to the outfall at Arney’s Pond.”

The project, which could stretch into 2011, was tendered to Newfound Construction Ltd. It is valued at $3,387,332 and is being cost shared by the municipality, province and federal government.

Following the successful completion of this contract, the system along the highway, from Powell’s to Morrow and Morrow Law Office, will also be upgraded.

“ There’s certainly going to be some logistical challenges,” Black admitted. “ Traffic flow will be significantly reduced. So patience is definitely going to be required.”

Nigel Black, chief administrative officer with the Town of Bay Roberts, is warning of traffic delays during water and sewer upgrades.
