Ladies’ league being planned
Success of recent tournament in Harbour Grace an indicator of interest
Soccer buffs in the Harbour Grace area are looking to establish a ladies’ soccer league next season.
And if the success of the first annual women’s soccer tournament in Harbour Grace last month is any indication, the league is well on its way to becoming a reality. The tourney was sponsored by the Conception Bay North minor soccer association, and held on Sept. 11.
In the championship, the Earharts defeated the Astros.
Organizer Don Coombs said four teams took part, including some 50 female players.
“ There’s a lot of interest,” Coombs said. “ I think it’s obvious we can get this off the ground next year.”
Coombs said there’s a gap in adult female soccer that he would like to see addressed.
“ You can drive to St. John’s and play, but there’s nothing here,” he said.
