Astros kick their way to provincials
Girls’ team undefeated at regional playdowns; Sentinels win boys’ crown
The Ascension Collegiate Astros posted an unblemished record at the regional girls’ soccer championships in Carbonear on Saturday, Oct. 2, and will look to continue that success at the provincials this weekend in Gander.
The Astros doubled their archrival, the Carbonear Collegiate Sentinels, 4-2 in the championship game. The Sentinels’ Rebecca Hearn made some noise by scoring two goals late in the match, but the game was outof-hand by that time, and the Astros held on for the win.
The Astros gave up just three goals in four games at the regionals — two of which came off Hearn’s foot — while scoring 14 on the opposition, which also included Crescent Collegiate of Blaketown and Laval High of Placentia.
Goal scorers for the Astros included the following: Kelsey Smith, Andrea Neil, Kathryn Mercer, Shara Hodder, Terri Delaney, Carly Norman and Emily Crummey.
Meanwhile, the Sentinels’ boys’ team had better luck, defeating Laval2-0 on Oct. 7 to take the boys’ regional title and win a spot at the provincials.
Greg King and Tyler Butt scored for the home team in the match played at the Carbonear Recreation Complex.
