Not many chances for call-ups among young Junior Stars team

The coach of the Conception Bay North Junior Stars of the St. John’s junior league says he was initially” were, very disappointed” to learn that the Ceebees senior team would be affiliating with the Avalon Junior Capitals for the 2010-11 season.

But upon ref lection, Stars’ coach Eddie Russell said, “ we do have a very young team, and not many of them would be able to step into the senior game.”

Russell made the comment last week on behalf of himself and Brian Hurley, the team’s general manager.

“ Last year when we were getting call-ups,” Russell noted, “ it was mainly our over-agers getting the chance to play, and currently we only have one over-ager on our roster, and he is not a local.

“Also, with the lineup they (senior team) currently have in place, I wouldn’t think there would be many opportunities for callups,” Russell said.

The coach said the senior team contacted Hurley to advise him of the decision to affiliate with the Avalon Junior Capitals, which is based in St. John’s.

“ Their main reason ( for the move) was they would be looking for a goalie in emergency situations, and they were interested in Kyle Downer of the Capitals,” Russell stated.

The Junior Stars were affiliated with the senior CeeBees last year. The two years’ before that the senior team was affiliated with the Junior Celtics, and the previous two years the junior Stars were affiliated with the senior team.

“ We are currently not affiliated with any senior team this season,” Russell said.
