Having an Epiphany about fire safety
Students enjoy visit to Heart’s Delight-Islington fire department
The Heart’s Delight-Islington Volunteer Fire Department helped reinforce the importance of fire safety to students at Epiphany Elementary during recent activities markingFire Prevention Week 2010.
On Friday, Oct. 8, students and staff from the school in Heart’s Delight-Islington were treated to a visit to the fire hall. The students, who come from the communities of Heart’s Delight-Islington and Heart’s Desire, were served lunch by some volunteer firefighters, and were shown fire safety videos.
Firefighters emphasized this year’s theme for Fire Prevention Week: Smoke alarms — a sound you can live with.
Earlier in the week the students also took part in a colouring contest, with the grand prize winners — Kendra Harris of Heart’s Desire, and Hayley Bishop of Heart’s DelightIslington — being named junior fire chief and junior assistant fire chief.
Both winners were given fire helmets and were to receive a ride to school in a fire truck last week.
Other winners include the following: Dylan Chislett, Meagan Burton, Alexander Crocker, Chelsea Crawford, and Mikayla Lahey. They received bicycle helmets.
The visit ended with the students exploring the various rescue vehicles, before returning to the school. This year’s visit proved to be both informative and enjoyable, with one student calling it, “the best day of my life.”
