Un­der-12 team wins D soc­cer ti­tle

It may have hap­pened more than two months ago, but mem­bers of the un­der-12 soc­cer team from Har­bour Grace are still bask­ing in the glory of their cham­pi­onship sum­mer.

The team cap­tured the pro­vin­cial “D” di­vi­sion ti­tle in midAu­gust in Gan­der, edg­ing Labrador West 32 in a fi­nal that was de­cided by a shoot-out.

It was the first un­der-12 pro­vin­cial ti­tle for Har­bour Grace in nearly a decade.

The cham­pi­onship game vic­tory was sweet re­venge for Har­bour Grace, which lost 4-1 to Labrador West in the round-robin por­tion of the tour­na­ment.

Mark Ryan was the hero for Har­bour Grace. He scored the game’s open­ing goal, and booted the de­cid­ing goal in the shoot-out. Matthew Hoyles also scored in the shoot-out. Labrador forced the shoot-out by scor­ing late in the con­test.

Ryan was named MVP for the Har­bour Grace squad, while Devon Groves re­ceived the hard hat award, and Ryon Wil­lians was named most sports­minded.

In round-robin play, Har­bour Grace tied teams from Tor­bay (1-1) and Burin (2-2), and edged Marys­town 3-2

The team was coached by Corey Pen­ney.
