As­cen­sion girls volleyball a win­ning bunch


The As­cen­sion Col­le­giate girls’ volleyball team dis­played am­ple tal­ent in a pair of re­cent tour­na­ments the school took part in.

At the 10th As­cen­sion in­vi­ta­tional, it bested seven other teams to win the tour­na­ment on Oct. 16. The fol­low­ing week­end, As­cen­sion trav­elled to Clarenville to take part in the Sub­way Clas­sic. There, the team made it to the semi-fi­nals, where it lost to the even­tual cham­pi­ons, the Clarenville se­nior “A” team.

At the As­cen­sion in­vi­ta­tional, the school fin­ished sec­ond in round-robin play to Bish­ops Col­lege. It played Mourt Pearl Se­nior High in the semi-fi­nals, and won two sets to one. As­cen­sion faced Bish­ops in the fi­nal af­ter hav­ing lost to the team from St. John’s in the round-robin. The team was able to re­deem it­self in the fi­nal by win­ning two sets to one.

Destiny Connolly and Brit­tany Lush were named tour­na­ment all­stars, while Chan­tal Boone was awarded the tour­na­ment MVP award.

At the Sub­way Clas­sic, As­cen­sion placed sec­ond in its di­vi­sion for round-robin ac­tion, and went on to beat O’Donel High School from Mount Pearl in its quar­ter­fi­nal con­test, be­fore los­ing to the host team in the semis.

This past week­end, the team was sched­uled to travel to St. John’s for Vol­leyfest, the last volleyball tour­na­ment in the prov­ince. It will host 48 teams play­ing in three di­vi­sions.
