Area stu­dents win schol­ar­ships

Some 14 high school grad­u­ates from the Con­cep­tion Bay North-Trin­ity South re­gion have been awarded schol­ar­ships.

They were among some 200 stu­dents from across the prov­ince who will share in over $200,000 in schol­ar­ships. Ed­u­ca­tion Min­is­ter Darin King an­nounced the re­cip­i­ents on Nov. 2.

Some 12 stu­dents from this re­gion were awarded $1,000 elec­toral district schol­ar­ships. These schol­ar­ships are awarded to three high school grad­u­ates in each district who achieved the high­est pub­lic exam marks. The win­ners in­clude the fol­low­ing: • As­cen­sion Col­le­giate, Bay Roberts — Zachary Bar­rett, Vic­to­ria French, Nakita Ryan, Jen­nifer Smith and Ali­cia Mercer;

• Car­bon­ear Col­le­giate — Karla Finn, Thomas Lafitte and Stacey Pike;

• Cres­cent Col­le­giate, Blake­town — Chelsea Gam­bin, Terry Reid and An­drew St. Ge­orge;

• Bac­calieu Col­le­giate, Old Per­li­can — Na­dine Kelly.

Some 55 stu­dents re­ceived the Cen­te­nary of Re­spon­si­ble Govern­ment Schol­ar­ship, which is also val­ued at $1,000.

Two were from this re­gion. They in­clude the fol­low­ing: Alexan­der Mor­gan and Kayla Snow of As­cen­sion Col­le­giate,

“ We are pleased to be able to pro­vide this fund­ing to as­sist these stu­dents as they move on to post­sec­ondary ed­u­ca­tion,” said King. “ Be­ing awarded these schol­ar­ships is a clear in­di­ca­tion of the im­por­tance each of them places on ed­u­ca­tion, and I am con­fi­dent each will f ind suc­cess in t h eir cho­sen ca­reers.”

Re­cip­i­ents of the schol­ar­ships are cho­sen based on pub­lic ex­am­i­na­tion re­sults.
