Ascension claims VolleyFest title
Ascension Collegiate of Bay Roberts was a big winner at the VolleyFest tournament in St. John’s, held Oct. 30-31, capturing the senior high female B title.
Ascension managed to come from behind in the final to defeat St. James Regional High School in a three-set battle. Ascension lost a tight first set to the Port aux Basques school by a score of 27-29, but cruised to victory in the next two by scores of 25-12 and 15-9.
Ascension also competed in the senior high male B tournament, but was unable to crack the top-10 rankings after round-robin play to qualify for the playoffs.
The female team managed to compile a 3-1 record in the round-robin. It started off on the wrong foot in a match against Prince of Wales Collegiate, losing in three sets by a score of 2522, 13-25, and 15-5, but bounced back in its second game against O’Donel High School, dominating the Mount Pearl team in straight sets, 25-10 and 25-7.
The team was busy on Saturday, playing in five games, including the final. The Astros beat Clarenville High School in three sets. The victory was a sweet one for Ascension, as the team had lost to Clarenville the previous weekend in the semi-finals of the Subway Classic.
It completed round-robin play with a win over Cloud River Academy from Roddickton in three sets.
After a straight-set win against the Bishops College junior team from St. John’s in the quarter-finals, the Astros defeated Mount Pearl Senior High in a close three-setter.
