Two vying for Cupids seat

Byelection scheduled for Dec. 9

A pair of candidates will vie for a vacant Town of Cupids council seat in a byelection set to take place on Dec. 9.

Voters will choose between Kevin Connolly and Doug Furey when casting their ballots at the Cupids Community Centre, where voting will take place.

Neither candidate has served on council, though Furey missed obtaining a seat in the 2009 municipal election by only four votes, finishing just behind Coun. Ross Dawe, who had 150 votes to Furey’s 146.

For Connolly, his run for council is fuelled by a desire to help the community get things done in order to make improvements, which he says is pivotal following the success of Cupids 400 this summer.

Connolly says he will help council in every way he can, as all councils in Newfoundland and Labrador need bodies to complete the necessary work. Recently retired, Connolly spent 40 years working in the iron ore industry across Canada, and was a member of a union.

He says the current council is doing a good job looking after the community, particularly when it comes to looking after roads.
