New funds for fire de­part­ments

A trio of fire de­part­ments from Trin­ity South have re­ceived fund­ing from the Depart­ment of Mu­nic­i­pal Af­fairs.

Fire de­part­ments in Heart’s Con­tent, Heart’s De­light-Is­ling­ton, and New Per­li­can will split $36,570 to be used for per­sonal pro­tec­tion equip­ment. The funds are ad­min­is­tered through Fire and Emer­gency Ser­vices — New­found­land and Labrador.

Heart’s De­light-Is­ling­ton will re­ceive $16,427; New Per­li­can will get $12,292; and Heart’s Con­tent is set to re­ceive $7,757.

“Fund­ing for new equip­ment is wel­come news for our vol­un­teer fire fight­ers and the res­i­dents whom they pro­tect,” Char­lene John­son, MHA for Trin­ity-Bay de Verde and Min­is­ter of En­vi­ron­ment and Con­ser­va­tion,

The over­all cost of the fire equip­ment will be ap­prox­i­mately $43,000, to be shared be­tween the prov­ince and mu­nic­i­pal gov­ern­ments un­der the Mu­nic­i­pal Cap­i­tal Works Pro­gram’s 90/10 cost-shar­ing ra­tio.

In 2010, the pro­vin­cial govern­ment bud­geted $1 mil­lion in ex­pen­di­tures on fire equip­ment, and $2.5 mil­lion on fire­fight­ing ve­hi­cles.
