No Dawe about it
CeeBees back-up netminder gets first win; French again patrolling the blueline
Bronson Dawe has no complaints about serving a role on the Conception Bay North CeeBee Stars roster that mostly involves planting his behind on the bench.
“ Freddie ( Diamond, the team’s usual starter) is an amazing goalie, and I’ve played back-up to him for the past six years now, and I’m more than happy to do it,” said the Bay Roberts native.
After two months without seeing any action, Dawe made his second appearance of the year in the CeeBee Stars 9-0 thrashing of the visiting Bell Island Blues on Jan. 8, in a game that marked the return of veteran defenceman Matthew French to the lineup. French left the team in early November because of work and family commitments.
“Matthew’s a big part of this team, and he felt strongly that he wanted to come back,” said CeeBees’ coach Ian Moores.
French did not take long to make his presence felt, scoring the second goal of the game seven minutes into the first period. French said he is pleased to be back in the lineup, and will fill an important gap on the back end.
Dawe, too, is happy to see the return of French, calling him a “ huge addition.”
The added help on defence hardly seemed to matter for Dawe, who had not played since Oct. 30, a 5-3 loss to Mount Pearl. The Blues could only muster 20 shots, while the CeeBees peppered Blues’ keeper Chris Walsh with 78.
“It’s was tough tracking the puck at first, but after you get those first couple of saves out of the way and get into a rhythm, it’s the same as if you played the night before,” Dawe said.
The CeeBees scored two goals in three seconds off the sticks of Chris Sparkes and Ryan Delaney. They may represent the quickest pair of goals ever scored in Newfoundland senior hockey, and matched an NHL record set by Jim Dowd and Richard Park in 2004.
Defenceman Brandon Roach has now scored in three straight games after going goalless through his first 12. Chris Petten’s goal was his second of the year, and Scott Brophy collected his fifth, giving him three goals in as many games.
Ray Dalton also tallied, while Mike Stevens and Matthew Thomey had four and three assists, respectively.
The previous night, the CeeBees defeated the Blues 10-3. Sean Wadden led the way with a hat trick, while Sparkes and Delaney each had two goals and an assist. Roach, Steven Greeley, and Chris Bartlett also scored.
The CeeBees were scheduled to play a pair of games against the Northeast Senior Eagles, Jan. 14-15. The team’s next game is Jan. 21 against the Blades.
Chris Bartlett, skating with the puck, enters the Bell Island Blues defensive zone alongside linemates Sean Wadden, #20, and Scott Brophy, bottom right. The CeeBees defeated the Blues 9-0 on Jan. 8, plastering goaltender Chris Walsh with 78 shots.
