Video store vandalized

The Compass - - SPORTS - BY BILL BOWMAN

Vandals smashed three large panes of glass in the front of Entertainment Exchange in Carbonear in the early morning hours of Saturday, Jan. 15.

While picking up bits of broken glass from the sidewalk in front of his store at 211 Water Street, owner/operator Kenneth Chubbs told The Compass, “ the door was still locked and nothing was taken from inside,” when he arrived on the scene around 7:30 a.m.

Chubbs said he had been visiting a friend upstairs in the same building until about 3 a.m., and everything was fine at the store when he left. So the damage must have been done sometime after that hour.

Chubbs said Trinity Conception District RCMP received the call around 5:45 a.m., so he suspects the damage may have occurred sometime shortly before then, perhaps around 5:30 a.m.

He didn’t have an estimate of the damage, but said his landlord’s insurance on the building covered the cost of the damages.

There were no rocks inside, but a piece of steel was found outside, which Chubbs suspects could have been used to smash the glass.

The RCMP took the piece of steel as part of their ongoing investigation.

The incident was the first of its kind Chubbs has experienced since opening his movie and video game rental operation Nov. 1.
