Cru­saders high on vic­tory

The St. Francis Lady Cru­saders fe­male bas­ket­ball team de­feated all com­ers at an ex­hi­bi­tion tour­na­ment held at the Har­bour Grace school on Jan. 22.

The squad of Grade 7 and un­der play­ers won all three of its game, in­clud­ing a 53-52 thriller over Stella Maris Academy of Trepassey in a con­test that de­cided first place.

Top scor­ers for the Lady Cru­saders were Mal­lory Gille­spie with 16 points, while both Sarah His­cock and Emily Kennedy had 10 points.

In its first game, the Lady Cru­saders de­feated Holy Cross Ele­men­tary of Holy­rood 45-25. Top scor­ers for the Cru­saders were Gina Pynn, with 14 points, Emily Kennedy, with eight, and Bri­anna Roberts and Sarah His­cock each chipped in with six points.

In the sec­ond game the Cru­saders once again proved to be vic­to­ri­ous with a 48-22 win over Tri­cen­tia Academy of Arnold’s Cove. Top scor­ers for the Cru­saders were Sarah His­cock, Gina Pynn and Shelby Oates, all of whom scored eight points.

The Lady Cru­saders are pre­par­ing for the provin­cials, sched­uled for St. John’s in March.
