Amalgamated volleyball’s spikes fall short
Amalgamated Academy of Bay Roberts had some good results at a pair of recent volleyball tournaments Feb. 4-5, but neither the male or female under-15 teams were able to return home with medals.
The male team, taking part in the provincial championships in Corner Brook, lost in the bronze-medal game for tier 1 to St. Paul’s Intermediate in straight sets, 22-25 and 16-25. The females, who travelled to St. John’s for the division 2 provincials, lost in the tier 1 quarterfinals to St. Peter’s Junior High, 17-25 and 1825.
Facing South West Arm on Friday, the male team opened with a straight-sets win, 25-19 and 25-16, before mauling Exploits Valley Intermediate, 25-5 and 25-12.
On Saturday, Amalgamated lost a three-setter to the host G.C. Rowe Junior High School by a score of 25-22, 12-25 and 13-15. It rebounded from the loss to once again defeat South West Arm, 25-22 and 25-21. A semifinal loss to eventual tier 1 champion Clarenville, 10-25 and 725, set-up Amalgamated’s bronze-medal match-up against St. Paul’s Intermediate.
On Friday, the female squad opened play with a win over the Laval Cavaliers, 25-15 and 25-8, and made it two in a row by defeating Pasadena Academy’s Grades 9s, 25-23 and 25-17.
Amalgamated opened Saturday with a straight-sets loss to eventual tier 1 champion Leo Burke Academy by a score of 14-25 and 2025, but followed-up with a win against Tricentia Academy, 25-19 and 25-20. It then lost a three-setter to Pasadena Academy’s Grades 9s by a score of 17-25, 25-13 and 13-15 before bowing out in the quarter-finals.
