Amal­ga­mated vol­ley­ball’s spikes fall short

Amal­ga­mated Academy of Bay Roberts had some good re­sults at a pair of re­cent vol­ley­ball tour­na­ments Feb. 4-5, but nei­ther the male or fe­male un­der-15 teams were able to re­turn home with medals.

The male team, tak­ing part in the pro­vin­cial cham­pi­onships in Cor­ner Brook, lost in the bronze-medal game for tier 1 to St. Paul’s In­ter­me­di­ate in straight sets, 22-25 and 16-25. The fe­males, who trav­elled to St. John’s for the divi­sion 2 provin­cials, lost in the tier 1 quar­ter­fi­nals to St. Peter’s Ju­nior High, 17-25 and 1825.

Fac­ing South West Arm on Fri­day, the male team opened with a straight-sets win, 25-19 and 25-16, be­fore maul­ing Ex­ploits Val­ley In­ter­me­di­ate, 25-5 and 25-12.

On Satur­day, Amal­ga­mated lost a three-set­ter to the host G.C. Rowe Ju­nior High School by a score of 25-22, 12-25 and 13-15. It re­bounded from the loss to once again de­feat South West Arm, 25-22 and 25-21. A semi­fi­nal loss to even­tual tier 1 cham­pion Clarenville, 10-25 and 725, set-up Amal­ga­mated’s bronze-medal match-up against St. Paul’s In­ter­me­di­ate.

On Fri­day, the fe­male squad opened play with a win over the Laval Cava­liers, 25-15 and 25-8, and made it two in a row by de­feat­ing Pasadena Academy’s Grades 9s, 25-23 and 25-17.

Amal­ga­mated opened Satur­day with a straight-sets loss to even­tual tier 1 cham­pion Leo Burke Academy by a score of 14-25 and 2025, but fol­lowed-up with a win against Tri­cen­tia Academy, 25-19 and 25-20. It then lost a three-set­ter to Pasadena Academy’s Grades 9s by a score of 17-25, 25-13 and 13-15 be­fore bow­ing out in the quar­ter-fi­nals.
