Crusaders capture gold
St. Francis School’s Grade 7and-under basketball team battled its way to gold at the Subway Invitational Basketball Tournament, held in Harbour Grace Feb. 18-19.
The Crusaders won gold by defeating the Baltimore Broncos team from Ferryland in a close game on the Saturday. The Broncos were clinging to a slim 37-35 lead at half time, but the Crusaders bounced back in the second half, taking control of the game to win 56-46.
St. Francis opened its homecourt tournament against Holy Cross, winning 49-28. The CrusaderAs next faced Persalvic Elementary from Victoria and cruised to a 46-26 victory.
It s t h i rd game f e a tured a tougher opponent in Mount Pearl, but the Crusaders found a way to control play en route to a 44-35 win.
The tournament title was the St. Francis team’s second in a row, following an exhibition tournament in January where it went undefeated in three games.
