CeeBee Atoms claim gold in Marystown

The Compass - - EDITORIAL OPINION - BY ANDREW ROBINSON

The CeeBees Atom team surprised its opponent from Bay Roberts in the championship game of a recent tournament in Marystown, rebounding from a 9-0 loss to Bay Arena in round-robin play to win 40, giving the CeeBees the gold medal.

Action got underway on Feb. 26 with the CeeBees first game against Bay Arena, followed by a tight 4-3 win against the host Marystown team. That evening, the CeeBees beat the Tri-Pen team from Whitbourne by an identical 4-3 score.

Those results paved the way for the Feb. 27 gold medal game against Bay Arena. Coach Brian Donovan said prior to that game, the CeeBees had only managed to defeat Bay Arena once this year.

“ Everyone put their heart on their sleeve for that game,” said Donovan.

The gold medal win is the first for that group in five years of playing together through various levels of competition, including two years of squirt play and another two years of novice action.

“ They were hyped up,” he said. “ The bench was rocking and the dressing room was rocking.”

The teams from Harbour Grace, Bay Roberts, and Whitbourne will continue to compete against each other in a number of tournaments leading up to provincials in Grand Falls-Windsor, taking place April 27-30.
