Roverines awash in silver
The Roverines under-15 female hockey team claimed silver at an invitational tournament in Bay Roberts Feb. 26-27, losing 1-0 to a team from Conception Bay Regional (CBR) in the championship game at the Bay Arena.
It’s the second consecutive second place finish for the Roverines, which was runner-up at a tournament in St. John’s last fall.
But coach Gary Pike wasn’t at all disappointed.
“All I asked for was 100 per cent effort. Each one of them went over that and worked really hard,” Pike said.
The team is comprised of 13 players from minor hockey associations in Bay Roberts and Harbour Grace.
Taylor Quinlan carried the offensive load for the Roverines. She scored five times, and managed to ding the puck off the post an equal number of times, said Pike.
Goaltender Courtney Caravan played all five games, allowed just eight goals and posted a shutout. Pike described her p lay a s “superb.”
The Roverines defeated CBR 42 in round-robin play. Pike said his team had some good chances in the final, but couldn’t capitalize.
The five-team tournament also featured entries from Clarenville, Whitbourne and Marystown.
The Roverines will host the provincial under-15 championships at the Bay Arena from March 25-27.
