Despite not having a pool to call home since January, the Poseidon Swim Club of Carbonear was able to send seven members to the 2011 short course championships, held in Deer Lake March 11-13.

Competing in 42 individual events, Poseidon swimmers earned 13 top-three finishes, led by Allison Somers and Dylan Hoben.

Somers collected four secondplace finishes and one third. She also had a personal-best swim in one of her marquee events, taking of f almost eight-tenths of a second in the 100-metre butterfly with a time of 1:12.41.

Hoben also had a strong meet, collecting one first-place finish, two seconds, and two thirds. He achieved personal-best times in four of his six events. Poseidon swimmers combined to achieve 21 personal-best times at the meet.

The meet also served as a qualifier for the provincial team, which will travel to Edmonton this May for an international swim meet. Somers came up just short in her efforts to make the team. She will instead serve as a third alternate should another swimmer be unable to attend the meet in Edmonton.

Approximately 180 swimmers from 11 clubs across the province took part in the short course championships.

The Carbonear pool is currently closed because of upgrades to the ventilation system. Brian O’Grady says it will hopefully be ready to reopen April 11. Since then, some members of the Poseidon Club have trained in Mount Pearl, and Saturday practices have been held at the MUN pool. The club was also scheduled to host its annual Swim for Hope in aid of the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre on March 18 in Conception Bay South.

Poseidon’s next meet will be the Spring Splash event April 9-11 at the Aquarena in St. John’s.
