Play coming to Carbonear

The play Jake’s Gift will be at the Princess Shelia NaGeira Theatre in Carbonear Friday, March 25 as part of its provincial tour.

The powerful drama by Juno Productions is about a Second World War veteran who reluctantly returns to Normandy, France, for the 60th anniversary of the DDay invasion.

Directed by Dirk Van Stralen the multi-award winning play was written and is performed by Julia Mackey. Mackey’s visit to Normandy for the 60th anniversary of D-Day inspired her to write the work.

“ I spent a week attending the ceremonies, walking the beaches and interviewing dozens of Cana- dian veterans who had returned for the ceremonies,” said Mackey.

“ It was the most moving experience I ever had, and I left France determined and inspired to share that experience with other Canadians.”

After it tours this province, Jake’s Gift will have been performed in over 120 communities across the country.

Mackey says she has received hundreds of emails and letters from Canadians telling her about their own “ Jake” and how much the story made them reconnect to the importance of remembrance.

Showtime for the Carbonear performance is 8 p. m.
