Roverines settle for bronze
The Bay Arena Roverines posted a 2-2 win-loss record at the recent provincial A under-15 female hockey championships in Bay Roberts and was forced to settle for a third place finish.
“ They worked really hard. They played really well,” head coach Gary Pike said.
The team is comprised of 13 players from minor hockey associations in Bay Roberts and Harbour Grace. The team captured silver at two previous tournaments this season, and also finished second at the provincials in 2010 and 2009.
Springdale defeated the Conception Bay Regional Renegades (Kelligrews) 5-4 in overtime to claim the championship banner.
The Roverines finished third after round-robin play in the five-team event, and was awarded the bronze medal.
The team posted wins over Mount Pearl (3-1) and St. John’s (8-0), and suffered losses to the Renegades ( 4-2) and Springdale (2-0).
Pike singled out Natalie Keeping, who scored eight of her team’s 15 goals. Courtney Petten also had three goals, while Brooke Williamson played a solid defensive game against the oppositions’ top lines. Goaltener Courtney Caravan was also “incredible,” said Pike.
The tournament was sponsored by the Bay Arena Minor Hockey Moms.
