Soccer weekend a super success

The Compass - - EDITORIAL OPINION -

The Conception Bay North Lightning sporting association hosted a celebration of soccer on March 26 with its Super Soccer Weekend. Some events had to be cancelled on March 25 because of a snow storm, but approximately 80 players braved the weather on March 26 to take part in soccer events.

The focal point of this weekend was the 5th annual Irish Cup indoor soccer tournament. This four-team club tournament gave players their first taste of competitive soccer for the year. All games were close with both semi-final games needing overtime.

CBN Lightning Red and CBN Lightning Black squared off in the championship game with the Red side coming away with a 5-3 victory. Members of the winning team include — Luke Cronin, Kyle Power, Kyle Mercer, Jaime McHugh, Noah McHugh, Valerie Croke and Patrick Tarrant.

This year, a mini Irish Cup tournament and skills competition was held for players in grades kindergarten to three. This threeteam tournament was a non-competitive, fun event. All players thoroughly enjoyed themselves while getting plenty of exercise and sharpening their soccer skills.

One final event which was fun for players and parents was the parent-child soccer challenge. This event included players ages two-and-a-half to four. The tiny tot soccer stars challenged their parents to a number of silly soccer games. This was more fun than a barrel of monkeys!

This was a fantastic way to finish up the winter soccer program at All Hallows Elementary in North River. It gave the older players a chance to use their skills and work as a team in a competitive setting. This will help prepare them for the summer program when they compete against other clubs.

Soccer events for younger children are important for building self-esteem and a sense of belonging with the CBN Lightning soccer family. All players were awarded gold medals at the end of each event. This sends a message to each and every player that they are all winners every time they participate in a physical activity such as soccer.

We are very grateful to the coaches and volunteers who helped run the winter program. The spring-summer outdoor program will begin in the middle of May.
