Holy Redeemer lose in semi
Following an undefeated run in round-robin play that gave them the top spot in the B division, the Holy Redeemer boys’ basketball team fell short in its quest to win the Newfoundland and Labrador Basketball Association East Coast Grade 9 boys’ C tournament at Brother Rice Junior High in St. John’s.
The team from Spaniard’s Bay lost 43-31 in the semi-finals to St. John Bosco of Shea Heights. Laval High School went on to defeat St. John Bosco in the final by a score of 50-30 to claim the provincial banner.
Holy Redeemer opened the tournament on April 1 with a 46-26 win over Persalvic School from Victoria, then doubled-up on the host team 40-20 the next morning before pulling out a tough win against Mobile by a score of 37-31. The three round-robin wins set up a semi-final match against the team from Shea Heights on April 3.
Persalvic and Amalgamated Academy in Bay Roberts both had tough weekends, finishing 0-3 in their respective divisions.
After losing to Holy Redeemer, Persalvic lost 45-25 against Mobile and 44-35 to Brother Rice. Amalgamated lost its first game of the tournament to Laval by a score of 46-26, then dropped a close one to St. John Bosco, 60-52, before bowingout with a 51-31 loss to Baltimore School from Ferryland.
