Council vacancy in Heart’s Content

The Compass - - TRINITY SOUTH -

If candidates show interest, voters in Heart’s Content will have a second election to contend with only a month after the May 7 federal election takes place.

Former councillor Ken George has resigned, leaving one spot up for grabs on the seven-seat council.

Town clerk Alice Cumby said if multiple candidates show interest by the May 17 deadline for nominations, a byelection will be held on June 7.

If the last municipal election in 2009 gives any indication, there is a strong chance multiple candidates will step forward. In that election, the names of 17 candidates appeared on the ballot.

The current council includes long-time Mayor Don Blundon, Deputy Mayor Art Cumby, and councillors Jean Boland, Fred Driscoll, Glenda Hiscock and Tolson Rendell.

George received the seventh most votes in the 2009 election with 109, narrowly beating his closest competitor, incumbent Gloria Peddle, by six votes.
