Jessica Dawe off to provin­cials

Jessica Dawe, a Level III stu­dent at As­cen­sion Col­le­giate, will com­pete at the pro­vin­cial Lions pub­lic speak­ing competition in Gan­der on April 16.

Dawe qual­i­fied by plac­ing first at the Bay Roberts Lions Club speak-off on March 3, and also took top hon­ours at the re­gional speakoff hosted by the Vic­to­ria Lions Club on March 22.

Her topic was “ The in­crease of drug use in teens.”

The March 3 event fea­tured four com­peti­tors, all from As­cen­sion Col­le­giate.

Melissa Gal­way, a Level I stu­dent, was first run­ner-up. Her her topic was “De­sen­si­tiza- tion.” The sec­ond run­ner-up was Jessica War­ford, who spoke about do­mes­tic abuse. The fourth en­trant was Am­ber Samms and her topic, “In­di­vid­u­al­ity.”

The speeches were to be be­tween four and six min­utes in length and judged on con­tent, de­liv­ery and an­swer­ing two ques­tions each about their top­ics. The judges were Judy Mor­row, Adam Gosse and Phyl­lis Rus­sell. The ques­tion­ers were Brian Dawe and Ger­ald Brad­bury. Time­keeper was Lion Wal­ter Snow.
