A 31-year-old male resident of Harbour Grace was arrested April 13 after Trinity Conception District RCMP executed a search warrant on a residence in that Conception Bay North town.

Assisted by members from the RCMP Customs and Excise Unit in St. John’s, RCMP seized a quantity of illegal contraband tobacco products.

The accused was later released from custody with legal documents to appear in court on June 21 in Harbour Grace to answer to charges under the Excise Act and Revenue Administration Act.

Sgt. Boyd Merrill, Media Relations Officer with RCMP B Division, said, “ buying illegal tobacco is not a victimless or harmless crime. Smuggled tobacco and its sale robs the province of needed revenue for hospitals, schools and other vital programs.”

He said the RCMP and its support units remain vigilant in their efforts to disrupt the illegal tobacco trade in Newfoundland and Labrador.
