Cresent girls lose in final
Provincial ball hockey championships held in Bay Roberts
A team from Crescent Collegiate in Blaketown bowed out in the final of the girls’ 4A provincial high school ball hockey championships in Bay Roberts on Saturday, April 9.
The Coyotes fell 4-1 to Discovery Collegiate of Bonavista in the final, with Carey Burt registering the only goal for Crescent. The tournament featured eight teams. Crescent entered the final as the favourites to win it all, after going undefeated throughout the tournament up to that point.
The team had a strong performance in the roundrobin, going 3-0 with wins over the host Ascension Collegiate Astros (6-2), Appalachia high of St. George’s (70) and the eventual champs from Bonavista (5-3). Alicia Gillam tallied five goals in the win over Appalachia.
In semi-final play, the Coyotes rebounded from a one-goal deficit to defeat a stubborn Mount Pearl Senior High squad 5-3. Rebecca Green netted a hat trick, Carey Burt had a goal and two helpers, and Gillam tallied once for the winners.
But the rematch against Discovery in the final saw an opposite outcome from the 5-3 score in round-robin play, with Bonavista coming out on the winning end and claiming the provincial banner.
The host Bay Roberts team recorded one win in three outings. It came again Appalachia by a score of 70. Chelsey Bradbury scored two goals and picked up an assist to lead Ascension to victory. Courtney Caravan recorded the shutout.
