Association to pay homage to the late Gord Dean

The Compass - - EDITORIAL OPINION -

The CeeBees minor hockey association in Harbour Grace has announced it will rename its minor hockey room in honour of the late Gord Dean, a dedicated volunteer who passed away Jan. 25 at the age of 62.

An official ceremony will be held prior to the start of the 2011-12 minor hockey season, executive member Wendy Penney announced during the association’s year-end banquet and awards ceremony on May 23.

More than 530 people attended the event.

Dean was a tireless volunteer in both hockey and and softball, and was associated with minor hockey for some three decades.

Penney said Dean most often went above and beyond what was expected of him, and deserves to be remembered in such a prominent way.

The association also paid tribute to Craig Shute, a minor hockey volunteer who passed away in May 2010 at the age of 47.

Members of the Dean and Shute famiies were in attendance.

“ We will always remember you. All award winners should hold their awards with so much pride to be selected in their memory,” Penney stated.

She described the evening as a “ night of remembrance.”

A salute to youth

It was one of many highlights from the year-end banquet, which marked the conclusion 2010-11 hockey season.

In a bid to recognize the next generation of hockey players, the association presented trophies to every member of the beginner, squirt and novice programs.

“ These players are the foundation of our programs,” Penney stated. “ Our executive felt they deserve recognition as well.”

There was also high praise for members of the Peewee A team that captured gold on home ice at the provincial C division tournament in April.

Meanwhile, the association paid tribute to those graduating from the minor hockey program.
