Restaurant work halted

The Compass - - EDITORIAL OPINION -

The Town of Bay Roberts has advised the owners of a proposed new A&W Restaurant to halt any development work until all approvals are in place from both the municipality and the provincial government.

The restaurant will be located on the former site of Strut Salon at 161 Conception Bay Highway, directly in front of the Bay Arena, in a highly commercial area of the town.

A building on the site has been demolished, and heavy equipment had begun some preliminary site work.

In a letter to the town, the owners asked that they be allowed to proceed with site development and foundation work prior to official approvals from the provincial government.

At its regular meeting on May 31, council approved the site plan in principle, subject to final approval by the province. But permission to proceed with the project was denied until a property lease agreement with the Bay Arena Association was formalized, and all other permits were in place.

Bernadette Chard and Craig Morrissey of North River hope to have the business up and running by this fall.

When reached last week, Chard said the business could employ up to 40 people.

“It’s going to be good for the area,” she said.
