A salute to the na­tional flag

• The red and white flag fea­tur­ing the styl­ized maple leaf was raised for the first time over Par­lia­ment Hill in Ot­tawa, in 1965.

• Red and white were des­ig­nated as Canada’s of­fi­cial colours dur­ing the procla­ma­tion of the Royal Arms of Canada by King Ge­orge V in 1921.

• The Cana­dian flag was first planted on the sum­mit of Mount Ever­est in 1982 and ap­peared in space for the first time in 1984, on the uni­form of Cana­dian as­tro­naut Marc Garneau.
