Drowning victim a resident of Ochre Pit Cove

The Compass - - TRINITY SOUTH -

Police say the man who died in a boating mishap in the waters off Harbour Grace on Sunday, June 19 was a commercial fisherman from Ochre Pit Cove.

The 50-year-old man was tending to his lobster pots near a place called Bear’s Cove.

RCMP Cpl. Sean Tipple said police received a call from a Harbour Grace resident at about 1:40 p. m., reporting that an overturned boat was seen in the water.

Police and other emergency response agencies, including the Harbour Grace Volunteer Fire Department, later recovered the man’s remains on the shore.

The victim was the lone occupant of the 18-foot open boat. Police say he was not wearing a lifejacket or floatation device when he was recovered.

The name of the deceased is not being released, at the request of the family.
