Province needs more public housing

The Compass - - EDITORIAL OPINION -

Dear editor,

I couldn’t believe my ears. The Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation is paying for public ads to promote the moral reputations of the people in those public housing units to break the negative stereotyping of their tenants.

That is no doubt an admirable objective, but don’t you think that is money that could be better spent fixing up the present housing units and building new units?

As a landlord, I personally know the great need in this region for public housing and as a municipal councillor for many years was actually involved with bringing public housing to Grand Falls-Windsor. This actually reminds me of the negative reaction from neighbourhoods slated to receive that new housing at that time.

Unfortunately, it seems to me, and also to desperate potential public housing tenants, that very few such new units are being erected.

So, I ask you: why do we have a growing bureaucracy for public housing when public housing is being gradually diminished? Of course, if this Crown corporation is able to divert needy citizens away from voicing a need for more public housing by broadcasting how law-abiding and wonderful its present tenants are, just maybe no one will notice how the actual physical, on-the-ground units, are steadily and constantly evaporating.

Of course, I am aware our recent federal governments have been trimming their transfer payments to our province, but we are receiving new oil dollars that could be earmarked for the construction of public hous- ing units.

If the present trend continues without new housing, why don’t you Tories lay off your old buddies and send them packing to live on their MHA pensions?

Talk about Harper stacking the Senate with such louts?

Our provincial government is no less guilty. In short, carry out your original mandate or fold up your public housing tent and slide into obscurity.

At least we’ll save your obscene salaries. Of course, I am assuming that there no bonuses paid in this Crown corporation bureaucracy because that would be the ultimate insult to our people.
