Butt’s Esso loses double-header
The Carbonear men’s slo-pitch league played a double-header Monday, June 27. Butt’s Esso lost both matches by wide margins.
In the first game, Rock Hard Construction rolled over Butt’s 13-7 on the strength of three hits each from Gord King, Jim King and Trevor Smith. Stephen King and Randy Moores had two hits each. Rodney Green, Brad Gallant, David King, Ryan Dean, Bradley Harris and David Riggs had one hit each.
Stephen King tossed the win, while Gerard Griffin was tagged with the pitching loss.
Top batters for the losing team were Jeff Parsons with three hits, one of which was a homerun. Ryan Parsons and Jody Doyle had two hits each. Chad Parsons, Blair Parsons, Dennis King and Chris Parsons had one hit each in a losing cause.
In the second match-up, Butt’s Esso lost by an even wider (16-9) margin to West Side Charlies.
West Side triumphed on the strength of three hits from Tim Brake and Mike Squires.
Top batters for the winner were Tim Brake with three hits, including a homerun. Bradley Harris had two hits, one of which was a homerun. Mike Squires had three hits. Paul O’Leary, Mike Whiteway, Roy Flight and Ryan Dean had two hits each, while Sam White had one hit in helping with the win.
Sam White tossed the win, while Gerard Griffin was tagged with the loss.
Top batters for the losing team were Ryan Parsons and Andrew Butt with three hits each. Blair Parsons had two hits, including a homerun. Jeff Parsons, Jody Doyle and Shane Lambert had two hits each, while Chris Parsons had one hit in a losing cause.
Before starting the first game between Rock Hard Construction and Butt’s Esso, players lined up for a moment of silence to honour the late Gord Dean, who passed away in January. Dean umpired the slo-pitch league for 32 years and also served on the executive for a number of years as umpire-in-chief.
