One busy spot
The anniversary also happened to coincide with the 75th anniversary of formal health care services in the area, which started in 1936 with the opening of the province’s first cottage hospital, known for half a century as the Old Perlican Cottage Hospital.
On its 50th anniversary in 1986, the cottage hospital had its name changed to the Dr. A.A. Wilkinson Memorial Hospital in recognition of the man who served as chief medical officer for 25 years.
Referring to the early days at the current facility, Lockyer recalled, “in the beginning, things were far from smooth, but with much help the transition became a lot easier.”
Lockyer also commended the fundraising efforts of the ladies’ auxiliary. The funds have been used toassist in the comfort and care of patients and their families.
“ They (auxiliary) have and continue to be an essential asset,” she said.
Under Eastern Health
The health centre came under the jurisdiction of Eastern Health when the regional health authority was formed in 2005.
It provides a variety of services, including a 24hour emergency department, laboratory and x-ray services, four patient beds, including a palliative care bed, chemotherapy and two community health offices.
“Health care services in the area have undergone numerous changes in three quarters of a century, as service priorities evolved and technology advanced,” observed Vickie Kaminski, president and CEO of Eastern Health.
“ What has remained constant is the dedication of health care professionals and a commitment to quality service,” Kaminski pointed out.
George Butt, vice-president of Eastern Health, suggested: “Old Perlican’s Cottage Hospital survived longer than many others in the province because of strong public support. Seventy five years later that community spirit is still alive and well, and continues to enhance health care in the region.”
The Eastern Health officials were among approximately 175 people who turned out at the John Hoskins Community Centre in Old Perlican later in the evening to commemorate the occasion.
