Shea re­ceives ex­cel­lence award

Bri­gus Navy League cadets hand out year-end awards at an­nual re­view

The coxswain with 119 Vick­ers Vimy Navy League cadets in Bri­gus has been awarded the Cadet Award of Ex­cel­lence in this prov­ince for 2010-11.

Chief Petty Of­fi­cer I Ni­cole Shea of Marys­vale was pre­sented with the award dur­ing the group’s an­nual re­view cer­e­mony on June 5.

The re­cip­i­ent is se­lected by the Navy League of Canada in Ot­tawa, and is given to the top Navy League cadet in each prov­ince.

The Bri­gus group is one of five Navy League cadet corps in the prov­ince. The oth­ers in­clude three in St. John’s and one in Gan­der.

Navy League cadets are be­tween the ages of 9 and 12 years-of-age, and un­like the tra­di­tional sea, air and army cadet pro­gram (ages 12 to 18), is not af­fil­i­ated with the Depart­ment of Na­tional De­fence.

The Bri­gus corps, which was es­tab­lished 37 years ago, had roughly 60 cadets on pa­rade this past year, said com­mand­ing of­fi­cer Lt. (NL) Demita Hynes.

The cadets pa­rade on Wed­nes­day night at the Le­gion in Bri­gus, and at­tracts young boys and girls from Avon­dale to Bay Roberts.

“ We are like the feeder corps for the sea, army an air cadets,” Hynes ex­plained.

Hynes de­scribed the an­nual re­view as an “ex­cel­lent per­for­mance by all.”

The cer­e­mony in­cluded dis­plays of ri­fle drill, phys­i­cal fit­ness and a sun­set cer­e­mony.
