Shea receives excellence award
Brigus Navy League cadets hand out year-end awards at annual review
The coxswain with 119 Vickers Vimy Navy League cadets in Brigus has been awarded the Cadet Award of Excellence in this province for 2010-11.
Chief Petty Officer I Nicole Shea of Marysvale was presented with the award during the group’s annual review ceremony on June 5.
The recipient is selected by the Navy League of Canada in Ottawa, and is given to the top Navy League cadet in each province.
The Brigus group is one of five Navy League cadet corps in the province. The others include three in St. John’s and one in Gander.
Navy League cadets are between the ages of 9 and 12 years-of-age, and unlike the traditional sea, air and army cadet program (ages 12 to 18), is not affiliated with the Department of National Defence.
The Brigus corps, which was established 37 years ago, had roughly 60 cadets on parade this past year, said commanding officer Lt. (NL) Demita Hynes.
The cadets parade on Wednesday night at the Legion in Brigus, and attracts young boys and girls from Avondale to Bay Roberts.
“ We are like the feeder corps for the sea, army an air cadets,” Hynes explained.
Hynes described the annual review as an “excellent performance by all.”
The ceremony included displays of rifle drill, physical fitness and a sunset ceremony.
