Roads in the Carbonear-Harbour Grace region will see new asphalt this construction season as the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador continues to roll out the 201112 provincial roads program.

The Department of Transportation and Works has issued a tender which includes resurfacing of approximately 1.25 kilometres of Route 70 from Gadden’s Mash toward Victoria, and for various sections between Line Road interchange and Gadden’s Mash.

Also included is the upgrading and repaving of approximately 1.4 kilometres of Clown’s Cove Road in Freshwater and approximately 500 metres of Route 70 near Tilton.

Upgrading is also slated for a section of Beach Road in Bristol’s Hope and a portion of the beach in Freshwater.

“Our government is aggressively investing in infrastructure in all areas of our province, particularly in rural areas,” said CarbonearHarbour Grace MHA Jerome Kennedy. “ The road work provided for in this tender will benefit all travellers in our region and will help maintain our transportation network for years to come.”

“Our government is investing more than $1 billion this year for provincial infrastructure improvements, and road and bridge work features prominently in our plan,” added Transportation and Works Minister Tom Hedderson.

“ This allows for significant road work in every corner of our province.”

This year’s provincial budget provides funding of $216.4 million for road and bridge improvements, supplemented by an additional $ 35.2 million in federal government funding, for a total road and bridge investment in 2011-12 of $251.6 million.
