We’re getting the equipment
Now all we need is staff to operate it
I am very pleased that the Minister of Health, Jerome Kennedy has announced funding for capital equipment purchases and infrastructure maintenance at Carbonear General Hospital. But wait a minute! A couple of things don’t make sense. One of the items for purchase is an arthroscope. An arthroscope is a specialized piece of equipment for use by orthopaedic specialists ( bone specialists) for peering into joints.
Problem is we don’t have any orthopaedic specialists.
Can we expect an announcement from the minister of the recruitment of an orthopaedic specialist? If not, that arthroscope will just end up going to St. John’s for use there, paid for with monies intended for capital equipment at Carbonear.
And those UV light boxes? They’re used in the treatment of skin conditions including psoriasis. Currently UV therapy is overseen on site by physiotherapists.
The current physiotherapy wait list for outpatients is eight months.
Perhaps we’re getting more physiotherapists too!
I look forward to the announcement. Paul Bonisteel M.D.
