CBN Bantam Baseball team wins silver medal
Team now ranked No. 2 in the province
The CBN Bantam AAA and Mosquito AA teams from Upper Island Cove both had impressive results at provincial Bantam AAA and Mosquito AA tournaments held over the weekend of Aug. 5-7 in Gander.
After dropping the first game of the tournament on Friday, Aug. 5 the Mosquito team responded with two big wins on Saturday, Aug. 6 to push themselves into the semifinals on Sunday, Aug. 7.
A team spokesman said the boys played a great game, but fell short in the end, losing 11 to 9 against a good team from Grand Falls Windsor.
Despite the fact the boys were hoping to make the final, the tournament was a great tune-up for the Mosquito AA Atlantics being played in Upper Island Cove in September.
On the Bantam side, the team got off to a great start on Friday with a 5 to 0 win over Gander.
Heavy rains forced the cancellation of the Saturday and Sunday schedule. The Upper Island Cove team went directly into the semi-finals on Monday, Aug. 8. After a big win against CBS in the semi-final, the CBN Bantam AAA team met the St. John’s Capitals in the final.
The CBN team came home with a silver medal after losing 8-4 to the St. John’s Capitals.
After their silver medal performance, the CBN Bantam AAA Baseball team are now ranked number two in the province for their age group behind St. John’s.
Bantam player Chris Smith won the top pitcher award at the AAA Tournament, while Bantam player Nick Parsons picked up the tournament’s most spirited and effective player.
The Mosquito A team were scheduled to host host the provincial tournament in Upper Island Cove over the weekend of Aug. 12-14.
