ELLEN FRENCH —Passed away on July 23, 2011 under the caring watch of her family, Pauline (Roger), Harry ( Joanna) Linda (Tom) and Laura. Cherished grandchildren Amanda (Hugues), Meredith, Andrew ( Jessica), Michael and Emily. Ellen was born in Bay Roberts, Newfoundland on Feb. 21, 1921, the first daughter of 11 children of Bethlehem and Sophie Mercer. Ellen was named after her grandmother. Predeceased by her husband Ronald (1998). Brothers Frank, Lloyd (Muriel), Lewis, Hayward (Susan), Pearce ( June) and Harry, sisters Jean (Stan) Bradbury and Doris Henderson, brothers-in-law Rick Marginson and Adrian Hierlihy. Leaving to mourn sisters Bertha and Florence, sisters-in-law Ada and Beulah and many nieces and nephews. An indomitable and independent woman who would give anything a try — she learned to drive at the age of 65 and rode on the back of a Harley at 80; she was the conduit of all the family stories, always wanting to know the “ news”; a prolific knitter, net worker; a wonderful grandmother and renowned for her Baked Alaska, Tea Biscuits and Hot Rod Relish. Ellen was a true Newfoundlander, practical, purposeful and pioneering. The family wishes to extend warmest gratitude for the care, compassion and friendship provided to Ellen by the staff of Bethany Lodge, Unionville. A celebration of her life was held on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Central United Church, 131 Main St. Unionville. Private family internment Melville Church Cemetery, Markham.
