Cancer survivors and their families will join friends, neighbours, and co-workers at the Carbonear Recreation Complex on Saturday, Sept. 10 for the eight annual Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

While past relays have been held in Bay Roberts and Harbour Grace, Danielle Doyle, who chairs the Trinity Conception Relay for Life, said this is the first time it is taking place in Carbonear.

Suggesting, “ there are very few of us who have not been touched by cancer in one way or the other,” Doyle said, “everyone has their own reason for relaying.”

Described as the Canadian Cancer Society’s “signature event,” the Relay for Life is a twelvehour event that runs from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

“ More than just a fundraiser,” the Relay organizer said, “ it is an opportunity to get together with family and friends and celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer, and fight back in the hope of finding a cure for this terrible disease.”

Dana Blackwood-Cox will open the event at 10:45 a.m. with her song, “No time for me.” A teacher, mother of three and recent cancer survivor, Blackwood-Cox will also be guest speaker at the survivors’ reception scheduled for 11:45 a.m. at Carbonear Collegiate.

Last year, over 120 cancer survivors took part in the survivors’ walk and reception in Harbour Grace.

“ This year we expect as many as 150 survivors to participate,” Doyle told The Compass.

Participants are identified by the colour of their shirts, with survivors wearing yellow shirts; participants, white; and volunteers, blue. A luminary ceremony is set for 9 p.m. “During the luminary ceremony candles in luminary bags are placed around the track in honour of loved ones who are fighting cancer, or in memory of those who have lost their battle,” Doyle explained.

There will be a variety of entertainment throughout the day as well as childrens’ activities.

If you are a cancer survivor, or know someone who is and would like to participate in the Survivors’ Walk; volunteer; purchase a luminary; or enter a team, should contact Danielle Doyle at 595-2049 or 746-8798, or Sarah Neil at 1-888-753-6520.
