Bay Roberts Sea Lions roar to provincial championship
For the sixteenth year in a row, the Bay Roberts Sea Lions were crowned provincial champs at the Short Course Provincial Summer Club Swim Championships at the Gander pool Aug. 26-28.
Eight teams, with a total of 355 swimmers, participated in the event, including the Gros Morne Piranhas, Baie Verte Dolphins, Springdale Bluefins, Grand Falls-Windsor Gators, Gander Guppies, Clarenville WaveRunners, Marystown Marlins and Bay Roberts Sea Lions.
Some 110 of the 152 registered Sea Lions swimmers attended the meet.
The Sea Lions won in Top Female Team, Top Male Team and Overall Team categories.
Sarah Dawson, in the eight and under 25-metre backstroke, beat a provincial record, swimming in 22.9 seconds compared to the previous 23.19 seconds.
Kathryn Mercer and Brandon Petten won Top Achiever Honours in the 15-16 female and male categories respectively.
Colin Parsons, Owen Petten and Cameron Simms had a clean sweep in the 11-12 Boys 50-metre breaststroke, plac- ing first, second and third respectively.
In several of the final events, the Sea Lions had 2-4 swimmers making the top six finals. In addition, the 20 Bay Roberts relay teams placed in first to third spots.
Coaching staff, Garrett Simms, Adam Drover and Caitlin Hanlon, hosted the Sea Lions annual banquet at the Bay Roberts Lions Club Aug. 30.
Other awards presented during the evening included the following:
• Most Improved Honours — Emily Welsh and Riley Dawson
• Most Sportsman Like swimmers, chosen by the team — Garrett Simms and Sarah Dawson
• Coaches Choice Awards — Devin Percey, Morgan Kearley, David Simms and Sydney Reid
Seventy of the 110 swimmers took home Personal Best plaques, the top awarded handed out.
Club registrar Denise Simms explained, “ when swimmers go to Gander they have a seed time and if they beat this time they receive a personal best award.”
