Bay Roberts Sea Lions roar to provin­cial cham­pi­onship

For the six­teenth year in a row, the Bay Roberts Sea Lions were crowned provin­cial champs at the Short Course Provin­cial Sum­mer Club Swim Cham­pi­onships at the Gan­der pool Aug. 26-28.

Eight teams, with a to­tal of 355 swim­mers, par­tic­i­pated in the event, in­clud­ing the Gros Morne Pi­ran­has, Baie Verte Dol­phins, Spring­dale Bluefins, Grand Falls-Wind­sor Ga­tors, Gan­der Gup­pies, Clarenville WaveRun­ners, Marys­town Marlins and Bay Roberts Sea Lions.

Some 110 of the 152 reg­is­tered Sea Lions swim­mers at­tended the meet.

The Sea Lions won in Top Fe­male Team, Top Male Team and Over­all Team cat­e­gories.

Sarah Daw­son, in the eight and un­der 25-me­tre back­stroke, beat a provin­cial record, swim­ming in 22.9 sec­onds com­pared to the pre­vi­ous 23.19 sec­onds.

Kathryn Mercer and Bran­don Pet­ten won Top Achiever Honours in the 15-16 fe­male and male cat­e­gories re­spec­tively.

Colin Par­sons, Owen Pet­ten and Cameron Simms had a clean sweep in the 11-12 Boys 50-me­tre breast­stroke, plac- ing first, sec­ond and third re­spec­tively.

In sev­eral of the fi­nal events, the Sea Lions had 2-4 swim­mers mak­ing the top six fi­nals. In ad­di­tion, the 20 Bay Roberts re­lay teams placed in first to third spots.

Coach­ing staff, Gar­rett Simms, Adam Drover and Caitlin Han­lon, hosted the Sea Lions an­nual ban­quet at the Bay Roberts Lions Club Aug. 30.

Other awards pre­sented dur­ing the evening in­cluded the fol­low­ing:

• Most Im­proved Honours — Emily Welsh and Ri­ley Daw­son

• Most Sports­man Like swim­mers, cho­sen by the team — Gar­rett Simms and Sarah Daw­son

• Coaches Choice Awards — Devin Percey, Mor­gan Kear­ley, David Simms and Syd­ney Reid

Seventy of the 110 swim­mers took home Per­sonal Best plaques, the top awarded handed out.

Club regis­trar Denise Simms ex­plained, “ when swim­mers go to Gan­der they have a seed time and if they beat this time they re­ceive a per­sonal best award.”
