West Side sweeps to victory
Wins Carbonear slo-pitch crown in convincing style
West Side Charlies have been crowned kings of Carbonear men’s slo-pitch with their crushing defeat of Butt’s Esso in the championship series.
In Game 1 of the best-of-five series, West Side and Butt’s played to a 13-12 decision in a hotly contested affair on Sept. 20.
Tim Brake was tops at the plate for West Side with two hits, one of them a home run. Paul O’Leary, Paul R. O’Leary, John Jacques and Sam Flight chipped in two hits each.
Dennis King and Stephen Peach paced the losers with three hits, with both hitters clearing the fence. Jeff Parsons and Blair Parsons posted three-hit nights, while Chris Parsons and Gerard Griffin had two hits apiece.
Sam White picked up the win, while Gerard Griffin took the loss.
Game 2 was not close, as West Side cruised to a21-6blowout win over Butt’s to take a stranglehold on the series.
Leading the offensive onslaught for West Side was Mike Whiteway with three hits, one of them a home run. Mike Squires and Phil Hurley each had three hits. Tim Brake contributed two hits, one of them his second home run of the final series. John Jacques, Paul R. O’Leary and Alf Bourne chipped in two hits each.
Butt’s got most of their offence off of the bats of Cory Clarke, Chad Parsons, Chris Parsons and Shane Lambert, each with two hits.
Sam White toed the rubber for the win, while Gerard Griffin took the loss.
Get the brooms out
In another close game, West Side Charlies slipped past Butt’s Esso 13-12 to clinch the championship trophy Thursday, Sept. 22, at the Carbonear Recreation Complex.
Pacing the offense for the winning side was John Jacques with three hits. Paul R. O’Leary and Alf Bourne had two hits each. Tim Brake continued his hot streak, clubbing his third home run of the series.
Jeff Parsons had a two home run night in the loss. Charl Clarke had two hits, including a round tripper, and Cory Clarke had two hits.
Sam White picked up his third win, while Gerard Griffin took the loss.
