West Side sweeps to vic­tory

Wins Car­bon­ear slo-pitch crown in con­vinc­ing style

West Side Char­lies have been crowned kings of Car­bon­ear men’s slo-pitch with their crush­ing de­feat of Butt’s Esso in the cham­pi­onship se­ries.

In Game 1 of the best-of-five se­ries, West Side and Butt’s played to a 13-12 de­ci­sion in a hotly con­tested af­fair on Sept. 20.

Tim Brake was tops at the plate for West Side with two hits, one of them a home run. Paul O’Leary, Paul R. O’Leary, John Jac­ques and Sam Flight chipped in two hits each.

Dennis King and Stephen Peach paced the losers with three hits, with both hit­ters clear­ing the fence. Jeff Par­sons and Blair Par­sons posted three-hit nights, while Chris Par­sons and Ger­ard Grif­fin had two hits apiece.

Sam White picked up the win, while Ger­ard Grif­fin took the loss.

Game 2 was not close, as West Side cruised to a21-6blowout win over Butt’s to take a stran­gle­hold on the se­ries.

Lead­ing the of­fen­sive on­slaught for West Side was Mike White­way with three hits, one of them a home run. Mike Squires and Phil Hur­ley each had three hits. Tim Brake con­trib­uted two hits, one of them his sec­ond home run of the fi­nal se­ries. John Jac­ques, Paul R. O’Leary and Alf Bourne chipped in two hits each.

Butt’s got most of their of­fence off of the bats of Cory Clarke, Chad Par­sons, Chris Par­sons and Shane Lam­bert, each with two hits.

Sam White toed the rub­ber for the win, while Ger­ard Grif­fin took the loss.

Get the brooms out

In an­other close game, West Side Char­lies slipped past Butt’s Esso 13-12 to clinch the cham­pi­onship tro­phy Thurs­day, Sept. 22, at the Car­bon­ear Re­cre­ation Com­plex.

Pac­ing the of­fense for the win­ning side was John Jac­ques with three hits. Paul R. O’Leary and Alf Bourne had two hits each. Tim Brake con­tin­ued his hot streak, club­bing his third home run of the se­ries.

Jeff Par­sons had a two home run night in the loss. Charl Clarke had two hits, in­clud­ing a round trip­per, and Cory Clarke had two hits.

Sam White picked up his third win, while Ger­ard Grif­fin took the loss.
