Bargain Giant stores to close
The impending closure of two Bargain Giant stores in Conception Bay North will likely mean the loss of more than two dozen jobs.
The stores are located in the Trininty-Conception Square in Carbonear and at the Bay Roberts Mall.
In an Oct. 19 press release, Hart Stores Inc. announced 32 Hart, Bargain Giant and Géant des Aubaines stores are subject to liquidation.
This includes 11 stores in Newfoundland and Labrador.
An official with Hart Stores Inc., Rick Leckner, told Transcontinental Media that the company is under the scrutiny of the courts.
“Because we are under creditor protection, any decision that is made has to be sanctioned by the courts,” he said.
Wally Snow, property manager of the T.C. Square and former Bargain Giant employee, confirmed the impending closure, but did not confirm a date.
“ The store will be liquidating until Jan. 31,” he said.
The decision leaves a fairly big vacancy in the mall, but Snow is confident it can be filled.
“New prospects will come in,” he said. “Some kind of chain store will step in to fill it.”
The space was previously occupied by The Bay.
Bargain Giant has been a vital cog in the Bay Roberts Mall for the last 16 years.
“It is our biggest tenant,” said acting manager Dean Churchill.
Churchill said the loss of the midsized department store is “a big loss for the mall and the town.”
It is expected 15 employees at the Bay Roberts location could lose their jobs.
The company has been in financial hot water for some time.
Per the company website, on Sept. 8, Hart Stores Ltd. was advised by the Toronto Stock Exchange it would be delisted from the TSX when the market closed Oct. 7 for failure to meet listing requirements.
