Local teams come up short at Volleyfest
Teams from the Trinity- Conception region did not have much to cheer about following their participation at Volleyfest 2011 held in gymnasiums around St. John’s Oct. 28- 30.
The Ascension Collegiate senior boys’ team came the closest to garnering a medal in the tournament, which features schools from as far away as Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Ascension played in a division with Pearson Academy in Wesleyville, Discovery Collegiate in Bonavista, Lakewood Academy in Glenwood and Laval in Plancentia.
The Astros went 3- 1 in the round robin, only dropping their first game to Pearson Academy two- sets- to- none.
Ascension met New World Island in the first game of the playoffs, winning 2- 1.
Moving on to face Phoenix Academy in Carmenville, Ascension beat them 2- 0.
The Bay Roberts team matched up with Pearson in the semifinals, dropping their second game of the tournament to them, 2- 0.
Pearson went on to win the tournament.
Baccalieu Collegiate in Old Perlican made it as far as the quarter- finals in the senior high boys’ division, after posting a 2- 1 record in the round robin.
Baccalieu lost to Random Island Academy two sets to none in the quarterfinals.
In the junior high Grade 7 & 8 bracket, Amalgamated Academy in Bay Roberts made it to the Grade 8 semifinals, with a round robin record of 4- 0.
Amalgamated faced Clarenville Middle School in the semifinals, losing two sets to zero.
