Lo­cal teams come up short at Vol­leyfest


Teams from the Trinity- Con­cep­tion re­gion did not have much to cheer about fol­low­ing their par­tic­i­pa­tion at Vol­leyfest 2011 held in gym­na­si­ums around St. John’s Oct. 28- 30.

The As­cen­sion Col­le­giate se­nior boys’ team came the clos­est to gar­ner­ing a medal in the tour­na­ment, which fea­tures schools from as far away as Halifax, Nova Sco­tia.

As­cen­sion played in a divi­sion with Pear­son Academy in Wes­leyville, Dis­cov­ery Col­le­giate in Bon­av­ista, Lake­wood Academy in Glen­wood and Laval in Plan­cen­tia.

The Astros went 3- 1 in the round robin, only drop­ping their first game to Pear­son Academy two- sets- to- none.

As­cen­sion met New World Is­land in the first game of the play­offs, win­ning 2- 1.

Mov­ing on to face Phoenix Academy in Car­menville, As­cen­sion beat them 2- 0.

The Bay Roberts team matched up with Pear­son in the semi­fi­nals, drop­ping their sec­ond game of the tour­na­ment to them, 2- 0.

Pear­son went on to win the tour­na­ment.

Bac­calieu Col­le­giate in Old Per­li­can made it as far as the quar­ter- fi­nals in the se­nior high boys’ divi­sion, af­ter post­ing a 2- 1 record in the round robin.

Bac­calieu lost to Ran­dom Is­land Academy two sets to none in the quar­ter­fi­nals.

In the ju­nior high Grade 7 & 8 bracket, Amal­ga­mated Academy in Bay Roberts made it to the Grade 8 semi­fi­nals, with a round robin record of 4- 0.

Amal­ga­mated faced Clarenville Mid­dle School in the semi­fi­nals, los­ing two sets to zero.
