Wade Oates, the newest member Bay Roberts town council, has many fond memories of Christmas growing up in Bay Roberts during the late 60s and early 70s.
“Leading up to the big day, I remember going to the town’s Santa C laus parades and skating on the local ponds,” he said.
Oates told The Compass it was an exciting time for himself and his sisters. They wo u l d get so excited on Christmas Eve that “mom and dad allowed us to open one gift before going to bed.”
He said there is another family Christmas Eve tradition that he continues to share with his boys today.
“We would listen, as a family, to The Night Before Christmas record, there were no CD’S back then,” he said. “I still listen to it occasionally with my boys during the annual kids’ Christmas party with my extended family.”
Oates said he would wake up early Christmas Day and “raced to the Christmas tree with my sisters.”
“We opened our gifts as a family, skipped breakfast and ate junk food from our stockings before sitting down to Christmas dinner together and played with our new toys for the rest of the day.”
