1. Tragedy at Christmas parade
The 2011 holiday season got off to a tragic start in Carbonear when 41-year-old Kevin ‘Popeye’ Tobin died after falling from a float at the 61st annual Christmas parade on Dec. 11.
Tobin was a member of the Relic Riders Motorcycle Cub. A handful of club members were riding aboard a flatbed trailer, and Tobin was playing the role of The Grinch.
Tobin caught the attention of the many hundreds of spectators who lined the parade route with his lively antics. But tragedy struck after the parade when Tobin fell from the trailer and died.
The incident made national headlines, and cast a dark cloud over what had been a festive mood in the region.
Tobin was given a moving send-off, with members of his family and the motorcycle club paying special tribute to the Broad Cove native.
One family member described Tobin as “the hardest working man you’ve ever seen in your life.” Tobin’s 14-year-old son, Devin, referred to his father as “the greatest man I’ve ever known.”
Members of the Relic Riders Motorcycle Club form an honour guard for the late Kevin ‘Popeye’ Tobin.
